With prefold diapers you get simplicity as well as cost savings.  Rectangular in shape, they generally have more layers of fabric in the middle section, where absorbency is needed.  Prefolds can be closed with a Snappi or a diaper pin, and folded in a number of ways, or just laid flat in a wrap style cover.  A cover is required with a prefold.
