Why Use a Birth Pool?

To be completely honest, the thought of birth pools kind of freaked me out at first glance. However, the more I looked at it, the more it made sense. As most midwives and doulas will tell you, there are huge benefits to labouring and even giving birth in water.

Shorter labours, reduced pain, and stress are just some of the advantages. Birthing centres and even hospitals now have facilities to incorporate warm water into labour and delivery, but what about if you are labouring or giving birth at home? Most of us don’t have large tubs spacious and deep enough to be comfortable in for long stretches of time, and I can tell you from experience that cramming a large pregnant belly into a tight bathtub during contractions can lead to even more discomfort and claustrophobia.

The birth pools we have are large and deep, allowing you to change positions easily. They are generously sized (even the mini pool that is perfect for small homes) so you won’t feel cramped or squashed, even if you choose to spend the majority of your labour in them. There is even space for your partner to join you! If you choose a water birth, the depth and features fit most midwives requirements.

What about the Ick Factor?

Birth is a messy process no matter whether it is on land or in water. How can we safely reuse the same pools for multiple families?

Firstly, the pools are ALWAYS used with a disposable liner that covers the entire pool. No water (or anything else) actually ever comes in contact with the pool. And when you receive your rental kit, it contains a brand new, never opened liner. As well, when we pick up the pools, we thoroughly clean every inch of them with bleach, just in case.

Secondly, you get a brand new hose to fill the pool with water. It is suitable for drinking water, and ensures that you are the only one to use that hose. You get to keep it too!

The only things that actually come into contact with the water you are in and you and your baby are single use (e.g. you are the only one to use it).

What do you need?

All you need to provide is space for the pool, and a hot water tap. We supply the air pump to inflate the pool, filling hose, liner and faucet

We recommend that you use a tarp to protect your floors, as well as lots of towels/blankets to keep things dry. And I always suggest practicing setting up the pool (e.g. inflating it, making sure your hose reaches and connects to the faucet properly) to make things go smoothly at Go Time.

What if I’m not having a water birth?

Birth pools can still be extremely beneficial for labour. If you are labouring at home, even just for the early stages before giving birth at home or in hospital, using a birth pool can still add comfort to your labour.

How does the rental work?

You have the birth pool for 4 weeks: we deliver it to you approximately 2 weeks before your due date, and we will schedule a time to pick it up 2 weeks after your due date. If baby still hasn’t arrived, we will happily extend the rental free of charge. If you’re two weeks over your due date, you deserve a break!

We try to keep lots of space between rentals, so if your due date changes, we will do our very best to accommodate.

To book a rental, fill out the rental form. We will contact you within 48 hours to arrange everything. Then we will hand deliver your pool and all accessories right to your door anywhere in the Ottawa area (including the Valley!). Birth pool rentals in Ottawa, Kanata, Orleans, Renfrew, Arnprior, Almonte, Carleton Place, Perth, Pembroke, Petawawa, Nepean, Ottawa Valley and more.

We recommend that you book early, as these pools are very popular!
