I really don't like paying my hydro bill. I'm the crazy mom who runs around the house shutting off lights after everyone because the less we have to pay, the better (and, you know, the environmental impact and all that)! Since we do a lot of laundry, decreasing the amount of electricity each load of laundry uses is important. During the summer months, we hang the majority of our laundry out on the clothesline. But with our lovely Ontario climate, one risks frostbite attempting to do that for about 6 months of the year. So how do we decrease the amount of energy our dryer uses? Enter ULAT Wool Dryer Balls!

What are ULAT Wool Dryer Balls?

Dryer balls are added to your load of laundry, and reduce drying time in a couple of different ways, one being by "fluffing" up the rest of the laundry so it can dry more quickly. ULAT Wool Dryer balls are sold and used in sets of three to maximize this drying effect.

ULAT Dryer Balls are made of 100% Canadian wool, and no animals are harmed in the harvesting or processing of the wool. They are handmade in Vancouver, British Columbia by an absolutely lovely couple. They put their hearts and souls into their products and company, and I am proud to carry ULAT dryer balls to support their amazing business! Their products were recently written about by David Suzuki's Queen of Green for their great environmental benefits!

ULAT's dryer balls are different than a lot of others on the market. The most striking difference is that they are much larger and softer than most. I love this, as my dryer is right next to my bedroom, so I don't have the constant <<clang clang clang>> sounds that some dryer balls create. As well, their larger size means that only three are needed, while other brands need up to eight!

What Are the Benefits of Using Dryer Balls?

Dry Laundry Quicker (and use less energy!)

By helping laundry dry more quickly, your dryer doesn't have to run for as long. These dryer balls can reduce drying time by 30-50%!! Since the dryer is the energy hungry part of your laundry routine, this will add up quickly! Especially when drying hemp and bamboo cloth diapers, which can take quite a while, any reduction in drying time is a big plus!

Reduce Static

I am living proof of this one. With a large dog, two cats and three horses, lint rollers used to be a fixture in our house, especially during static-filled winter days. Our clothes sucked up animal hair faster than our vacuum, and wearing black involved getting dressed in the driveway (thank you again for your patience, neighbours!) But I can't honestly remember the last time I reached for my lint roller. Our clothes come out of the dryer completely free of static, and they don't attract animal hair like magnets anymore.

Reduce Chemicals from Dryer Sheets

Lots of you have chosen to cloth diaper to reduce the amount of chemicals your family is exposed to. Here's one more way to do it. Dryer sheets contain tons of chemicals and fragrances, and even if you don't use them on your baby's clothes or diapers, they leave a residue in your dryer that will transfer to them anyway (and can cause problems with repelling in diapers). ULAT Wool Dryer Balls replace dryer sheets, eliminating another source of chemicals from your home. If you would like to add a scent to your laundry, you can add a couple drops of your favourite baby safe essential oil to the balls, and your laundry will have a light scent when you take it out of the dryer.

I really love my ULAT dryer balls. We have been using them for two years now, and they are still going strong. There are cheaper alternatives out there, but they don't compare to ULAT. They fulfill all of my criteria - they are environmentally friendly, 100% Canadian, ethically made and produced by a small business. Worth every penny to me! And they make a terrific gift for the environmentally conscious (or frugal!) person on your shopping list.
